Damon Albarn has told NME that he has been recording a new Gorillaz album on his iPad. […]Love this... The iPad is for consumption only, isn't it?! Does anyone still think this way?

FilmOn is streaming broadcasts of several network affiliates in the Los Angeles area, including those of NBC, CBS, ABC, and Fox, in an effort to entice users to purchase subscriptions to their service. The basic package costs $9.95 per month, while a premium package that includes movie channel via Free Broadcast TV on Your iPad - PCWorld. This is really interesting. While the traditional television companies are not happy about this or the Hulu model, viewers really are... I think that John Gruber put it best:
In short: in the face of popular new technology, he wants things to stay as they were before that technology existed. Good luck with that strategy, TV executives. - John GruberThe article notes that you can also watch a limited version of the four major networks if you don't have an iPad. However, if you use Safari and enable the Developer Tools you can turn this: [caption id="attachment_442" align="aligncenter" width="300" caption="FilmOn.com - PC Browser "]

Well, an Apple iOS product has been confirmed as coming to Verizon before the end of the month... However, not the famed iPhone, but the iPad.
Actually, more of a "flavor" of iPad to be more specific. The Wifi only iPad will make it's debut at Verizon stores on Oct 28th.
Verizon plans to pair the iPad with it's MiFi wireless 3G router to provide connectivity as well.
Verizon will offer three special bundles along with the basic Wi-Fi models, since the 3G-capable iPad uses GSM, not CDMA. The bundles will retail for the same prices as the Wi-Fi + 3G iPads ($629, $729, and $829 for the 16, 32 and 64GB models respectively) but will also include a Verizon MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot. You can also get each model on its own if you prefer, but you obviously won’t be able to use Verizon’s data. Only one data plan option is mentioned, and that’s 1GB of data for $20 a month.
So, if you are looking to break away from AT&T and show VZN unity. This is a good choice. However, know that your MiFi will be the size of a large smartphone, have a battery life of only about 2 hours and you get less data on Big Red... but hey it's a start!

An amazing article on how effective an iPad can be even in a somewhat hostile environment like and archeological dig site. Apple's features on how the iPad is revolutionizing different industries are amazing. However, I wish they would go into a bit more depth occasionally.
“It was the ability to enter so many disparate kinds of information, recording everything from architectural elements to fish scales and bones to the actual sequences of events. That my team could both type and draw on the screen, and also examine all previously entered data, made it an ideal single-device solution.”
I'd like to understand how FMTouch replaced the forms that they use and how those databases sync to provide the researchers with a unified store of information. Also, how are they getting photos onto the iPad? The camera doc? However, a fun read overall!

The following is some text that I have been working with surrounding the possible use of the iPad in for English Language Learners. I would love anyone's feedback and input on this topic. While the language is brief it is geared toward a potential grant opportunity.
Language acquisition (regardless of first or second language) is an intimate process and unfortunately the majority of technology is not always intimate. However, the form factor of a device that an individual holds in his or her hands, like the iPad, makes learning with this device very intimate. Learning will be a tactile, tangible interaction because an ELL student will be touching the actual information as opposed to a keyboard or other input method. Additionally, from a classroom environment standpoint, the immediacy of information in a non-threatening, non-disruptive manner is key in comprehension for ELL students. The iPad’s form factor, being a single slate design, does not create a physical barrier between the teacher and the ELL student and thus provides a more open learning environment. Another positive feature is the iPad’s operating system which allows only a single application can be open at a time minimizing possible distractions.
The overriding objective in providing the iPad, as opposed to a different computing platform, is to provide ELL students with current technology that will allow them to access thousands of learning applications. This access will positively impact their English language acquisition in ways that would not be afforded to them on conventional computing devices. For example, with the opening of the iBookstore by Apple, over 30,000 free books and novels will be available to the iPad via Project Gutenberg. The unique ability of the iPad is that it allows students and instructors to the newest and most advanced applications that are being developed every day. Beyond the multitude of iPad exclusive opportunities, students will also be able to leverage the iPad to enhance their learning with the iPad’s ability to access a standard suite of learning tools such as: translation applications, PLATO instructional software for English, reading and mathematics, internet for research purposes, words processing and presentation software, and to obtain the necessary 21st Century skills needed to be successful inside and outside of the traditional educational settings. Being that the iPad is a fully immersive technology, it will ultimately help ELL students to have a piece of technology which will allow them to interact without language barriers and become more competitive in an advancing digital world.

"Cornell University, Princeton University, and George Washington University, have banned the iPad from their campuses. George Washington University and Princeton University call the device a “security risk,” while Cornell is concerned about students chewing through too much bandwidth."
Me thinks there is more at play here...

Learned about these guys from this TUAW blog post. Have you heard about Blue Mango and ScreenSteps?
What a killer tool for folks who need to easily and quickly put together documentation for anything... I need to look into bringing this in to my personal and professional environments.
Here is a great sample for new iPad owners from the folks at Blue Mango:

My thoughts...
Heehee... waiting on the 3G to come out to get mine. However, I think most were the same way typing on the iPhone at first... Pages and the other iWork apps rock in the small testing I have done on a friends iPad. I know that most edtech folks are Google folks, and I am honestly wary of the emailing my docs to myself too. However, I have a MobileMe subscriber, so I am interested if things will be easier that route. If not, most of what I will do will either be in Zoho's Online Office Suite, or ported from iWork apps to Zoho for storage, retrieval and collaboration... Feel like a kid on the ground floor of change.

[final update: Apple just posted a streamed high quality version of the keynote here. Additionally, there are many blogs and articles written about what is coming in iPhone OS4. Check out my "What am I thinking about?" section to the right for a some of those articles. Here's looking to summer! (However, with 4.0 coming, I need to update at least my wife's 3G phone... )
[update 2: the official Apple iPhone OS4 page is up! Check it out for more detailed information. This is a good preview for Enterprise IT folks. Love the background possibilities for VOIP (like Skype) calls and multitasking during App calls / 3rd party app interaction.]
Follow the information on the update live from MacNN here: http://www.macnn.com/live
[update 1] Hot Information:
Major Updates:
"Users shouldn't have to think about certain elements of the interface. If you see a stylus, they blew it. In multitasking, if you see a task manager, they blew it. Users shouldn't have to ever, ever, EVER think about that stuff."
He "get's it" which is why the iPhone and iPad have been very successful to date. The iPad IS a game changer for the novice user, for the younger generation, for the fed up, for the in between the laptop and the pocket, for the traveler, for education... I am waiting for the 3G version before I get my hands on one full time, but what an amazing possibility when OS4 hit it!
